License VS Certification

The common misunderstanding people have is that a certification is equivalent to licensure. An individual who seeks certification will not be grant a licensure. There is an immense difference between a certification and a professional licensure. 

LICENSURE:

  • A state's grant of legal authority to practice a profession within a designated scope of practice.
  • A curriculum with a set of standards must be practiced and mastered.  
  • Examination from the state on the scope of practice must be completed and passed with a proficient score.
  • Upon sate, various number of hours of trainings need to be completed. 

Achieving a license is mandatory in order to practice a designated scope of a profession, state laws may provide criminal charges and penalties for unlicensed practice. Penalties for violating state laws vary from state to state. licensure renewal is also mandatory under the continued practice of education or professional development.

CERTIFICATION:

  • Certification usually is pursued voluntarily.    
  • Certification is granted by companies or private organizations.
  • There is no regulations as to the validity and effectiveness of the certification process.
  • Certification can be completed in as little as 7 hours.

 

seeking certification is not a legal process to practice a particular governmentally regulated profession, but does provide certificate holders to accurately promote that they are certified by the private entity.
